Year-round Festival Series – 11- Earth Day – Over 3,000,000 gallons of oil spilled into the ocean!

The Earth is like a blue and transparent glass globe, with a suitable climate to nurture life. In the galaxy, the Earth is unique. Endless desert formations, rich forests and rivers, firs and auroras in the snow, and the ocean with its turbulent waves; as well as the birds of the sky, the animals of the earth, the creatures of the sea, and the human beings, all are in this icy blue globe.

Earth Day is held every year on April 22 to raise awareness of our environmental protection. Since 1970, one billion people in more than 193 countries have participated in the program through coordinating organiser EARTHDAY.ORG. The theme for 2023 is Invest in our planet!

The largest single-day demonstration in the history of mankind was the first Earth Day! In 1970, more than 20 million people participated in Earth Day demonstrations in the streets of New York City on one single day!

Earth Day is an international event, but it is closely related to Hong Kong

Peace protester John McConnell launched a campaign in San Francisco in 1962 to reach millions of people, with the goal of rescuing the large number of refugees who had fled from China to British Hong Kong. From this campaign, he gradually adopted the slogan of peace, and through campaign after campaign, especially the call for alerting the deadly damage to the environment caused by plastic, his enthusiasm gradually evolved into raising public awareness of environmental issues.

He believed that it was the responsibility of mankind to protect the earth. He was deeply moved by Psalm 115:16 and by the publication in Life Magazine of the first human photograph of the Earth taken from outer space. Eventually, this photo from outer space became the flag for Earth Day.

Another reason for the establishment of Earth Day was a major oil spill off the coast of Santa Barbara in 1969. A Union Oil well exploded off the coast of Santa Barbara, California, spilling more than 3,000,000 gallons of oil and killing more than 10,000 seagulls, dolphins, seals and sea lions. The disaster of the century brought to light the urgent need for environmental regulations, environmental education and the establishment of Earth Day.

Here are some suggestions on how we can respond to Earth Day in our daily lives:

1. Try taking shorter showers.
2. Stop buying bottled water and bring reusable water bottles.
3. Don’t pour leftover cooking oil down the drain. When sewage flows into nature, it can extensively contaminate fresh drinking water and seriously damage the water sources that communities and wildlife depend on.
4. Eat a vegetarian diet once a week.
5. Take an eco-tour
