Year-round Festival Series 15  – Mother’s Day II – This is a priceless way to be abundant!

The connection between mothers and children can be traced back to the earliest days of pregnancy. Psychologists say that mothers who stay joyful during pregnancy have children who are born with a more peaceful personality. In this way, our personalities are deeply connected to our mothers. Celebrating Mother’s Day is not only a time to express gratitude to mothers or their caregivers who are mother figures, but it is also a time for children to feel loved.

Mother’s Day is equally important to both mothers and children. A mother’s love for her child is the first time in a person’s life that he or she feels love. It is also the beginning of a child’s first feeling of acceptance and connection with another person, his or her mother. The father is the provider, protector and leader of the family, sheltering and providing for the child, while the mother is the caring caregiver, providing a loving environment. Both parents become an important source of emotional nourishment for the child.

As a mother of the poor – Mother Teresa was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1979 for caring for the world’s poorest among the poor. When she received the award, she was asked, “What can we do to promote world peace?” She replied, “Go home and love your family.

Nations are built from the family as a unit, and by each person going home and loving their family, we are gradually building the future of a nation.

Mothers are the conduits of love that nourish the lives of children and enrich them both physically and psychologically. Love enriches our hearts and minds, and the most difficult poverty in the world to see with the naked eye is that of the poor who lack love.

In accepting the Nobel Peace Prize, Mother Teresa also pointed out that this lack of love is especially prevalent in our advanced countries. She said,

“Around the world, not only in the poor countries, but I found the poverty of the West so much more difficult to remove. When I pick up a person from the street, hungry, I give him a plate of rice, a piece of bread, I have satisfied. I have removed that hunger. But a person that is shut out, that feels unwanted, unloved, terrified, the person that has been thrown out from society – that poverty is so hurt-able and so much, and I find that very difficult.”

In this way, we as adults can show love to our mothers or mother-like caregivers on Mother’s Day as an important way to eliminate our inner poverty. If we reconnect our emotions with our mothers or caregivers, express our love for each other, irrigate and connect with love, we can make both mother and child healthy. Each will once again feel absolute and true abundance. This is the cure that money cannot buy.

Is winning achievements and status more important than spreading love?

Perhaps we may not agree with everything Mother Teresa said and did, and she was not perfect; perhaps her thoughts were questioned because we didn’t fully understand the meaning of her words. Nevertheless, Mother Teresa pointed out the “poverty” that lurks in our rapidly developing and materially rich world.

Why do you find it difficult to celebrate Father’s Day for your father, or Mother’s Day for your mother, to show your love for them? Why is it starting to become unimportant? What makes you feel that spending time with your family, friends or relatives is an unproductive and worthless thing to do?

The words of Mother Teresa at the Fourth United Nations Conference on Women in Beijing in 2006 may be worth considering: “No job, no plans, no possessions, no idea of “freedom” can take the place of love.”
