🎉Dragon boat racing returns after epidemic

Dragon Boat Races are back this year after the epidemic and today, Thursday, is the first day of the Dragon Boat Festival, so watching them is the perfect way to experience the festive atmosphere!

This year’s dragon boat races took place at Aberdeen Typhoon Shelter, Stanley Main Beach, Sai Kung Hoi, Shing Mun River, Tolo Harbour and Castle Peak Bay Typhoon Shelter. The Stanley International Dragon Boat Championships, among the six major dragon boat races, saw over 100 teams from Hong Kong and overseas, with over 5,000 participants. All dragon boat races are free of charge and are ideal for families to enjoy the festive atmosphere.

🌾Origin of the Dragon Boat Festival

The Dragon Boat Festival is one of the four major Chinese festivals, along with the Lunar New Year, the Qingming Festival and the Mid-Autumn Festival. It is said to be a festival to ward off the plague and is celebrated on the 5th day of the 5th lunar month. Another story has it that the festival was established to commemorate the death of the patriotic poet Qu Yuan, who threw himself into the river on this day during the Warring States period. The story of Qu Yuan has given the festival a humanitarian spirit and value.

In 2009, the festival was inscribed on UNESCO’s Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity, making it the first Chinese festival to be inscribed on the World Intangible Cultural Heritage List. In addition to being an important festival in China and Hong Kong, it is also celebrated as an important folk festival in Taiwan, Macau, Singapore and by overseas Chinese, as well as in Korea, Japan and Vietnam.

👉Rice dumplings should be eaten in moderation

Another feature of the Dragon Boat Festival, apart from dragon boat racing, is the eating of rice dumplings. According to the Sui Dynasty book “Yu Zhu Bao Dian”, the dragon boat race originated in the south, while rice dumpling eating was a custom of the Wu region and later spread to other regions. These customs predate the story of Chu Yuan in the Warring States period.

Rice dumplings are mainly made of glutinous rice and should be eaten sparingly by the elderly, people with high blood pressure, high blood fat, high blood sugar and chronic kidney disease. Glutinous rice is not easily digested by the intestines. There are also many healthy rice dumplings on the market that use a mixture of oats, red beans, barley and brown rice, which are healthier. Alternatively, you can choose a vegetarian rice dumpling made from beans, red beans and mung beans.
