Year-round Festival Series 23 – World Population Day – World Population Reaches 8 Billion?

World Population Day is celebrated every year on July 11. This day originated when the United Nations symbolically recognized a baby born in Yugoslavia as the world’s 5 billionth person on July 11, 1987, marking the day when the human population finally surpassed 5 billion. The United Nations Population Fund proposed that this day be designated as World Population Day. Now, July 11 has also been designated as World Population Day, a celebration that draws attention to the development of the world’s population and the important issues it raises.

In 2011, the world’s population reached 7 billion, and in 12 years, the world’s population has grown to 8 billion. Some attribute the increase in the world’s population and life expectancy to more advanced medical developments; technology that brings people closer together; and gender equality.

However, the UN report points out that these developments are not evenly distributed and have increased the disparity and inequality between the rich and the poor. The problems of climate change, violence and discrimination are becoming increasingly serious, with more than 100 million people worldwide now forced into exile.

There are as many people on the planet as there are sands in the sea. Do 8 billion people bring 8 billion testimonies of a better life? In the current competitive environment of the earth, does it seem like fairness has never existed?

It took hundreds of thousands of years for the world’s population to reach one billion. That is a slow growth process. In 2011, the world’s population reached 7 billion and is expected to reach 10.9 billion by the year 2100.

Will the planet be overwhelmed?

According to the UN article, the rapid population growth is largely due to the fact that more and more people are living to reproductive age and is accompanied by increased fertility, rapid urbanisation and increased migration, all of which have far-reaching implications for future generations of the planet.

One of the major population movements in recent years has been the Syrian civil war in 2015, which led to the flight of large numbers of Syrian refugees to Europe. We can imagine that these refugees fleeing to Europe as a result of the war will bring diverse and far-reaching changes to European countries.

I happened to be studying in Germany in 2015, and the city I was studying in, Leipzig, became one of the cities where Syrian refugee youth were assigned to live. They were provided with basic health care, education, housing, sanitation, water and food. In the eyes of the young Syrians, if they learn German, they can build a future on their young shoulders.

The eyes of these Syrian refugees are often filled with hope. Sometimes when I talk to them, their sometimes helpless, sometimes unknown confidence and optimism reminds me of my own father. I have some art projects about these refugees, and from their stories, I imagine how my father landed in Hong Kong back then.

Understanding the distribution of the world’s population is of great importance to national leaders or policymakers. Because they must know how many people are living on the planet? Where are they all located? How old are they? And their expectations have a major impact on the world environment.
