Year-round Festivals Series 35 – Mid-Autumn Festival – Let’s celebrate the Mid-Autumn Festival with your family!

In the eighth month of the Lunar Calendar, halfway through autumn, the moon is at its largest, fullest and brightest, and it is a time for people to enjoy the steady moonlight and the harvest season. People finally enjoy the fruits of their long summer’s labour. Looking at the harvest in the fields, people could finally rest and thank Heaven for its favour in the cool autumn breeze. The 15th day of the 8th lunar month, when the moon is at its brightest and most stable, is regularly celebrated as the Mid-Autumn Festival. From the Tang Dynasty onwards, the custom of enjoying the moon began, and flourished in the Song Dynasty. The Mid-Autumn Festival can also be regarded as the worship of celestial phenomena by human beings.

The moon has evoked a lot of associations in us. I remember that when I was an undergraduate student, I had my first non-commercial group exhibition with my classmates in a commercial gallery in Central, where all the works were not for sale. At that time, the four of us had different preferences and were used to different media, and we were thinking about how to make a consistent exhibition together.

We each used a blank piece of paper to write down the words of the topic we were interested in at the time, whether it was abstract or real. After we had finished writing the words, we compared them with each other and found that we had written the word “moon”.

In the end, we used the word “moon” as the theme for the exhibition, which is called “356,955 km”. 356,955 km is said to be the closest distance between the earth and the moon. Astronomical phenomena related to the moon, such as the “supermoon”, lunar eclipse, total lunar eclipse, blood moon, blue moon, etc., have led to the creation of art, whether it be poetry, dance, music, or art, the moon can be seen.

The moon, how easily it triggers the imagination of mankind!

Whether it is in literature, which has produced many poems and songs that have been passed down through the ages, pushing the human imagination to its limits; or in science, the desire to explore the universe through human intelligence, it is also caused by the moon.

The most important meaning of the Mid-Autumn Festival is to reunite with family. Mid-Autumn Festival is also an important childhood memory for me.At that time, you could go to the park with your friends as soon as you had dinner and mooncakes with your family. I would take the paper lanterns and play with the neighbourhood children with the lanterns.

To me, the old-fashioned paper lanterns, with their classical Chinese designs of plums, orchids, chrysanthemums and bamboos depicted on the top, and the colourful paper lanterns with yellow candlelight on the outside, were truly a piece of art!

As long as you light it, you can’t keep your eyes off it.

The other children, too, were carrying their favourite toy lanterns, some hanging from trees, some with wheels dragging them on the ground. We played happily all night long, and it didn’t matter when we went home. What a wonderful childhood memory!

I hope that this year’s Mid-Autumn Festival, if you have become an adult, you can still enjoy the fruits of your hard work with your loved ones at the end of the year, despite the heavy burdens you have!
