Year-round Festival Series 37 – Sweetest Day – He Unintentionally Saved Someone’s Life

On the third Saturday of October every year, Sweetest Day is celebrated. On this day, people share romance with each other and show kindness to strangers.

The festival began in Cleveland, Ohio, USA. In 1921, the first Sweetest Day was organised by a committee of twelve candymakers, led by candy maker C. C. Hartzell, which donated 20,000 boxes of candies to children, orphans, the elderly and the poor.

Although Sweetest Day is not a global holiday, it is predominantly celebrated in the Midwest, Northeastern U.S., Arizona and Florida. However, the most meaningful aspect of this holiday is that it reminds us that a kind word, action, or small gift can brighten someone’s day and give them the strength to face the challenges of the day. Even our small actions can make a big difference in someone’s life.

He accidentally saved someone’s life.

Every morning, Glen goes to the neighbourhood food truck to get coffee. Each time he pays the bill for the person standing behind him and invites the cashier to wish them a good day. Glen left without waiting for the man’s thanks. It was a small gesture, he thought, something he could do within his means.

According to author Kirsten Holmberg in Our Daily Bread, this man continues to buy coffee for the people behind him. He didn’t decide whether or not to bless those behind him based on whether or not they thanked him.

Until one day, Glen saw the tremendous impact of his small act.

One day, he read in the local newspaper that someone had actually changed their plans to commit suicide on that day because of his small act of love.

There is no way to plan, or estimate, how our blessings to others will be used, or how they will affect the lives of others. The only thing we know is to see what we have in our hands and use it to bless those around us. The person who has the ability to bless others is in a blessed position.

Is there a most heart-breaking day?

“I am the most miserable man in the world!”

Perhaps Ulysses S. Grant needed to shout that when he was cheated out of his life savings by a business partner and diagnosed with incurable terminal cancer. He is the former President of the United States.

Former U.S. President Grant accepted an invitation from author Mark Twain to publish his memoirs, which were completed a week before his death, to help his family survive.

As a result, Grant’s memoirs sold well and his family was well taken care of.  We are limited, but God is merciful.

Perhaps we have all cried out, “I am the most miserable man in the world!” In addition to the fact that we see only tragedy, we can’t know everything.

Hope is not a concept, it is a daily bread.
